Convert FLAC to MP3

There are lots of programs that can convert FLAC to mp3, many of which are available on the Internet. The programs below are free to download off the Web. No matter which version of the software you download, these instructions should still be valid (except for a few small changes).

Changing FLAC to mp3 with Winamp and ITunes

Step 1

Download and install Winamp. Download and install the FLAC library plug-in for Winamp. You’ll also need ITunes.

Open Winamp. Choose Options and then Preferences. Go to the Plug-ins section and select Output. Choose Nullsoft Disk Writer. Select Configure.

Press the Directory button and pick a folder to save the .wav files. Click OK and then Close.

Before you convert FLAC to mp3 in Winamp, go to the folder where the FLAC files are. Select all the files you want and click Open.

Click Play. Winamp will change them in to .wav files.

When Winamp is done, go back to Plug-ins and change the Output to DirectSound.

Open ITunes and go to Edit > Preferences. Click the General tab and go to Import Settings. From the Import Using list, select mp3. Pick the quality you want. Press OK when you’re finished.

Go back to the ITunes main window. Choose File > Add Folder to Library. Go to the folder where Winamp decoded the FLAC files to .wav format. Press OK.

Change FLAC to mp3 with Lame Mp3

Step 1

Download and install Lame Mp3 Encoder. You’ll need a zip extraction app like WinRAR or Winzip to install this program. An audio player (like Foobar 2000) is necessary.

Open Lame mp3 with the extraction program.

Open Foobar 2000. Drag the FLAC files into the audio player or select them using the File Open options. You can see the files on the playlist.

To convert FLAC to mp3, choose a FLAC file. Hold down ctrl and click to select as many FLAC files as you want. Right click it. From the submenu, choose Convert to.

Step 5

The Converter Setup will appear. Go to the Encoding Preset drop down menu. Select mp3. Click the button next to the drop down box. Select the bit rate and output quality. The default bit rate is 190kbps (variable). The higher quality mp3, the bigger the file will be. After you’re done, click OK.

Step 6

Foobar will look for the lame mp3 files. Go to the folder where you extracted the Lame mp3 Encoder files. When you find the folder, click Open.

Step 7

Choose a folder where to save the files and the conversion will start.
